Association for the Investigation and Development of Sciences (FC.ID)

FCiências.ID – Associação para a Investigação e Desenvolvimento de Ciências (FC.ID) is a Non-Profit Private Association, endowed with legal personality, created in 2017 as an common initiative of Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade de Lisboa (FCUL) and 6 private companies. Its aim is to support, potentiate and develop the research and innovation activities of its associates, while, simultaneously enhancing FCUL strategic partnerships with market and service companies. FCiências.ID is the legal representative of 20 research centres, in multiple fields of science, including among others, Mathematics, Statistics and Operational Research, Physics, Space and Astrophysics, Chemistry and Biochemistry, Geology, Geophysics, Biology, Computer Science and Informatics and Environmental and earth system sciences. FCiências.ID responsibilities are related to the administrative, financial and scientific management of the research centres and their research and innovation projects. Additionally, it also performs direct research work by hosting a suit of research and innovation activities, developed together with international teams funded at both National and European levels. Following specific agreements, every FCiências.ID associate may act as a third party supplying resources to FCiências.ID to execute its research and innovation projects. A third party agreement with FCUL is already in force. FCUL, as a third party, carries out directly its own share of work, notwithstanding the full responsibility of FCiências.ID for the contracted scientific and technical work under specific projects or service contracts. FCiências.ID is currently managing over 100 national research projects, 30 European (FP and H2020) projects, including two ERCs and three projects Coordination, and one COST Action as a Grant Holder.

Established in 2005, the Climate Change Impacts, Adaptation and Modelling (CCIAM) research group is part of the Centre for Ecology, Evolution and Environmental Changes (cE3c), at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon (FCUL) (, a core partner in the FC.ID.

CCIAM contributes to a better understanding of the impacts and consequences of climate change in strategic sectors for Portugal and Europe and aims to develop climate adaptation responses that are consistent with current global (environmental, social and economic) challenges. CCIAM focuses on how to model, analyse and evaluate climate impacts, risks and vulnerabilities across scales and socio-ecological systems; and how to best develop and disseminate climate adaptation through evidence-based services of recognisable excellence and added value to society. CCIAM primary fields of research are: (1) Climate data and climate change analysis; (2) Eco hydrology and socio-hydrology; (3) Urban climate impacts and resilience; (4) Health and wellbeing; (5) Nature-based and social-ecological innovations; (6) Art and climate communication; (7) Climate adaptation services; and (8) Sustainability science. CCIAM funding is obtained through competitive national and international calls (FCT, FP7, H2020, LIFE, COST, EEA, JPI) and service contracts via companies and tenders, securing over 7M of research funds in 2013-2017. CCIAM is responsible for an international PhD programme (PDACPDS), provides training and outreach activities, has multiple standing collaborations with international institutions (EEA, PIK, UEA) and memberships of scientific and policy committees and forums (EGU, IPCC, EASAC, JPI-Climate). CCIAMresearchers provide contributions to key technical European publications (EEA Reports), to the development of decision-support platforms and tools (Climate-ADAPT) and coordinate or participate in large EU projects (ETC-CCA, BASE, IMPRESSIONS, SOCLIMPACT, INDECIS) and coordination actions (CIRCLE, CIRCLE-2, PLACARD, ERA4CS, CONNECTEUR).
